Accoya Egg Becomes Source of Inspiration in Istanbul

Odeaubois and ACT Lighting have created a unique art installation called OVO, featuring sensory lighting and stage design. The first installation was held at the Marmara Forum in Istanbul during the Easter period. Using Accoya wood sourced from Belgium, Van Steenberge constructed a seamless structure consisting of 356 custom pieces assembled with invisible connections. This innovative design was brought to life thanks to Accoya’s exceptional stability and aesthetic flexibility, presenting an inspiring work of art to visitors in Istanbul.

An Impressive 6-Meter-High Accoya Wooden Sculpture in Assen

On World Animal Day, a 6-metre-high dog statue made entirely of Accoya wood was unveiled in Assen. The statue, called ‘Mannes the Dog’, was designed by Rotterdam artists Nio and Sefarijn and produced by Arie Doornekamp for Doornekamp Woodspecials. The statue, made of a total of 15m³ of Accoya wood, consists of 25 pieces and took a year to build. Each piece of the statue was completed by gluing Accoya wooden beams measuring 63 cm x 150 cm and then processing them to create the anatomy of the dog.

The statue design includes specially drilled holes for children to interact with. When the children’s voices are heard, steam is released from the statue, providing an interactive experience. Arie Doornekamp explained the reason for choosing Accoya as follows: Our team immediately understood that we had to use Accoya wood.

Thanks to its exceptional durability and dimensional stability, ‘Mannes’ will hardly shrink or expand in the open air, minimizing maintenance needs. This impressive sculpture has earned its place as a permanent work of art in Assen thanks to Accoya’s long-lasting construction, environmentally friendly features and aesthetic flexibility.

Kalmthoutse Heide, Belgium

Dynamic Views of Nature from the Fire Lookout Tower

The Kalmthoutse Heide park in Belgium has gained a major landmark with a new 42-metre-high fire watchtower. Architects NOHNIK and Bureau Bouwtechniek, as well as engineering firms ABT België, have designed an elegant lattice structure that combines wood and steel in perfect harmony. The tower offers a dynamic and panoramic view of the Kalmthoutse Heide landscape from every angle. The tower, consisting of 6-metre-high segments, has a structure that rotates and merges at each level.

The staircase design also follows the same rotating structure, changing direction at each level, making climbing the tower an impressive experience in itself. This watchtower not only provides an efficient workspace for fire watch teams, but also allows visitors and nature enthusiasts to discover the magnificent views of the region. Accoya wood was chosen for the railings, banisters and fire watch platforms of this striking structure.

The combination of steel truss construction and Accoya wood gives the tower an aesthetic that is both stylish and in harmony with nature. A sophisticated look is achieved by using different wood thicknesses and intervals. Thanks to Accoya's natural color and material structure, the tower provides a perfect integrity with the surrounding natural landscape.

Custom Floating Dock with Accoya Wood Opening to the Sea

A boat dock and floating raft, custom designed and built by Michael Green Architecture in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, Canada, has been finished with Accoya wood cladding. Located off the coast of Salt Spring Island, this unique floating dock provides additional space for the boat to rest, while also providing a great place to whale watch and enjoy the magnificent natural scenery.

Salt Spring Island is the largest southern Gulf Island between mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island. Accoya wood is an excellent choice for these challenging environments, where it is constantly exposed to moisture and water, due to its dimensional stability and superior resistance to decay. It requires minimal maintenance over time and has a long lifespan, making it an ideal material for marine structures. This impressive floating structure was designed by Michael Green Architecture, and the Accoya wood was supplied by Canadian Bavarian.

Use of Accoya Double Facade in the New Pilarín Bayés Library

One of the most important features that makes this structure unique is its double façade design. The reflection of natural light from the exterior to the interior ensures that the interior is illuminated with daylight and that the surrounding trees, gardens and historical city views are naturally included in the interior.

Accoya was chosen for the exterior cladding, creating a transition area between the double façade. The architects aimed to use a material with a natural appearance to strengthen the connection between the interior and the outside world, and Accoya, which stands out with its high performance, durability and stability features, perfectly met this need. Accoya, with its sustainability and long-lasting structure, has become an ideal choice for exterior applications. The Accoya wood used in this project was supplied by Accoya distributor Grupo Gámiz.
